UPDATE PADDINGTON TRAINS

Network Rail have repaired much of the damage and we are operating almost a full service this morning.  There are still some restrictions on our all electric fleet, and this could mean some changes for London and Thames Valley local services this afternoon as Network Rail work to complete the repair.

Long distance services into London Paddington from Wales, Bristol, the Cotswolds and the South West should not be affected.  We will keep our website, www.gwr.com, up to date with any new developmen

Hitachi and Network Rail continue to investigate the root cause of the incident and we wait to hear their findings.

NO TRAINS between Paddington & Reading

You may have heard that we are not currently able to run trains between London Paddington and Reading.  This follows damage to the overhead electric wires at Ealing by a test train operated by Hitachi Rail Europe yesterday evening – it was not in passenger service.

Network Rail have worked through the night, but need more time to safely repair and recommission the overhead wires.    They expect to be able to re-open two of the four lines into Paddington around midday. Disruption will however continue throughout the day.

We are therefore operating a reduced long distance service and there will be no local services between Reading and Paddington until lines re-open.  We are advising customers not to travel unless absolutely necessary and to check carefully before setting out.

For those who do need to travel we have arranged for GWR tickets to be accepted on London Waterloo services (change at Reading) or services to London Marylebone and our tickets are valid on South Western Railway, Chiltern Railways, Virgin Trains, West Midlands Railway and Transport for Wales services.  Customers between Reading and London can also use TfL underground and bus service

I am sorry for the very difficult start to the day for our customers.  We will be working with Network Rail and Hitachi to understand what happened and will do all we can to get the lines opened as quickly as possibl

All the latest information will be on our website www.gwr.com and will be regularly updating traditional and social media outlets

Great Western Railway improvements over Christmas

I thought it would be helpful to update you on the improvement work taking place across the Great Western this Christmas.

We have set up a dedicated web page www.GWR.com/Christmas which sets out the affected areas and the changes this will mean to journeys.

This year there will be work at Southall, Westbury, Guildford, and Severn Tunnel Junction.

The range of work means that services on the North Downs, West of England, South Wales and Bristol lines are affected, some with diversions and others with replacement buses.

We are recommending that customers make their Christmas getaway by Saturday 22nd  as work will start from Sunday 23rd December and on many routes will continue through to the New Year.

As in previous years there will be no trains on Christmas Day or Boxing Day.

If you would like more information on any aspect of the improvement work this Christmas, or indeed on any aspect of our services, please let me know and I will be happy to help.
