NEWS UPDATE 4th December 2023

Dear Local Resident
We would now like to update you on the progress of our mineral exploration activities. The Phase 1 drilling program in 2022 was very successful. We discovered high grade tin and also lithium. Of all the minerals essential for the Green Technology Revolution, to stop using fossil fuels and win the fight against climate change, tin and lithium are the 2 predicted where global demand will most exceed supply, as shown in the chart below.
Cornwall has a crucial part to play in securing a robust domestic supply of critical minerals to support UK industry, and Cornish Tin is proud to be part of the current renaissance of Cornwall’s industrial heritage, which is bringing hundreds of much-needed jobs to our county. We would like to thank all our many local investors and supporters, including numerous local residents.
You may have seen in the press recently that the Crown Estate has approved the grant to Cornish Tin of rights to prospect for and extract the “sovereign minerals” of gold and silver across a total of 500 sq km of Cornwall, (including the Great Wheal Vor area) which is a great honour for the company. Although we are primarily exploring for high grade tin and hardrock lithium, this grant consolidates our position as regards these minerals.
Community Matters
Here are some examples of recent events:
There has been 100% sign-up by local property owners of land access agreements for all boreholes drilled;
We have remediated all these drill sites in full compliance with our obligations;
Tree planting: this year we were delighted to plant at Ashton amenity field 75 trees and hedging native to Cornwall, “Tinners Avenue” and a small community orchard, and to celebrate the occasion with local residents, (see below). We would like to continue our tree planting efforts, and if any local residents wish to suggest suitable locations for tree planting, please contact rmh@cornishtin.uk;
We have continued to support the valuable work of Kernow Conservation, including the protection and re-introduction of water voles in Cornwall and, this year, the commencement of an exciting initiative to re-introduce ospreys as breeding birds in Cornwall. Kresen Kernow are also engaged on important work in Cornwall to rewild landscapes, save endangered species from extinction, eg protect the endangered marsh fritillary butterfly, and help build a better community across the Cornish countryside;
As mentioned in our News Update of 5 April 2022, we intend to research whether there is viability for the use of geothermal energy from the Great Wheal Vor area, for example in a district heating scheme, which could benefit local residents in the future. We have planned a borehole in our next drilling program to test this and will keep local residents informed.
Next Steps
Our next drilling program will build on the successful tin and lithium results of Phase 1. We envisage a further GPDO (General Permitted Development Order) application in the near future, in a similar format to the two GPDOs previously granted by Cornwall Council as Mineral Planning Authority. As before, we are notifying and discussing with all property owners on whose land the drillholes are located. We shall continue to keep local residents informed. This News Update is being circulated by email to those local residents and stakeholders who have so far provided us with their email addresses. It will also be placed on the Company’s website and provided for uploading to the Breage and Sithney Parish Councils’ websites respectively. Please contact sn@cornishtin.uk if you would like to be placed on the local residents’ mailing list.
